The University of Hamburg jointly with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht is establishing a transdisciplinary research focus on "Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CIiSAP)". The goal is to analyze ongoing and past changes of the state of the climate system, in response to natural and human-driven perturbations, to determine predictable elements of the climate system over a broad range of space and time scales, and to determine uncertainties intrinsic to predictions of important climate system and environmental indices (see www.clisap.de).

The Cluster of Excellence (CIiSAP) invites applicants for the following sub-project:

"From Famine to Genocide. Environment and Violence in Northern and Central Africa, 1950-2010"

The project attempts a transnational and integrated history of violence in Northern and Central Africa between 1950 and 2010 by focussing on environmental change as a radicalising factor. It aims to add environmental factors (including climate change, environmental degradation and change in land use patterns and economic production) to the analysis of the complex origins of collective violence (including ethnic cleansing and genocide) in the region.

For this project the university has a position open for a

post-doc research associate (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in in einem post-doc-Arbeitsverhältnis)

- salary group 14 TV-L with a starting date of June 1st, 2011.

The position calls for 39 hours per week. The fixed-term contract will end on 31.10.2012 ; see also § 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

Responsibilities:
A post-doc research associate will contribute to the project "From Famine to Genocide. Climate and Violence in Northern and Central Africa, 1950-2010" by organising guest lectures and workshops, assist with publications and contribute to a data base/bibliography/website on the subject. The post-doc research associate will contribute to the discussions of the research group on (African) Environmental History and Genocide Studies, and will coordinate and lead the drafting of funding applications. There will be time and opportunity to work on an individual research project within the overall framework of the project.

Requirements:
Academic degree in a relevant subject (such as History, African Studies Of Political Science or Geagraphy) plus a doctoral degree. Fluency in English is a requirement, command of other relevant languages a Plus. The successful candidate will have clear ability/competence for independent research. profound knowledge of research in at least same of Ihe following areas: mass violence and genocide, peace/conflict studies, social consequences of climate change, relevant area expertise.
